This year we are working closely with Shawn Cameron, who is the Park Ranger for Granville State Forest and he is very excited to be having us host our event at his park.
There are many new and exciting things that are in the
works for this years picnic, and its still to soon to say for sure what you can expect to see. As soon as things are approved or written in stone I will post the updates here.
Granville State Forest is located along the southern border of Massachusetts in the towns of Granville and Tolland, this state forest's 2,426 acres, borders with Connecticut's 9,152 acre Tunxis State Forest, creating a sense of
tranquil remoteness. Formerly, this extensive rolling terrain was once the hunting and fishing ground of the Tunxis tribe, later becoming open farmland and pastures; now slowly reverting back into a northern hardwood-conifer forest.
In 1749 the first English pioneer to this area, Samuel Hubbard, settled along the banks of the river now bearing his name. Enjoy a walk along the Hubbard River as it cascades through natural rock formations forming pools and waterfalls,
dropping a rapid 450 feet in 2.5 miles.
Cell service is fairly good at Granville State Forest, with the exception of Nextel. Nextel users be prepared to not have service in most of the park. If you have Verizon or Sprint your service is very good, but like most cell phones you could lose it in certain places.
Last year and held a coloring contest for ALL the kids that attended the picnic.
As the kids were coloring, they kept asking "what's the prize" and "what do we win", "It's top secret" I kept telling them. What they were coloring was the W.M.G. logo without any colors in it.
When it came time to choose the winner we let everyone that attended (except the kids) pick what colors they liked the best on the logo. At the end of the raffle, it was time to announce the winner
and what the prize would be. The prize would be, to see the winning colors on the next years Event Only Geocoin.
And the winner was Serena Henny of Worf's Pack.
As the winner, she will be getting the #01 Event Only Geocoin next year as well as seeing her colors on the coin.
This Contest was very well received and everyone cant wait to see the new coin. Here are Serena Henny's winning design colors.
Our sponsors are a big part of our event. Without there
generous donations we would not have great products to offer you during our raffle. 100%
of the money raised during the raffle goes directly back into the following years picnic.
When you are looking for great Geocaching products, please check out our sponsors sites first. Your purchasing of products from them shows that we
really appreciate there support of our event, and hope that they will continue to be sponsors in the future.
Listed below are some of the plans that we are working on for this years picnic. Nothing is written in stone yet, but if it is going to happen this year it will be posted below in the "Plans set for the Picnic" section.
